Clay Hosting First Recovery Fest Saturday

The Clay County Anti-Drug Coalition will host the county’s first-ever recovery fest at Donaldson Park this Saturday to encourage those who are in the recovery process from drug and alcohol abuse.

Clay County Anti-Drug Coalition Coordinator Kody Thompson said other counties across the state host similar events and enjoyed success. Thompson said the event will provide an opportunity for those who are recovering from drug abuse to feel seen and heard.

“It provides hope and healing,” Thompson said. “For those in recovery to really understand that their community is willing to offer support and at the very least just understand what they have been through and to provide help and resources just like the coalition does.”

Thompson said it is important for those in recovery to have a great support system. Thompson said Recovery Fest will allow those to connect and support each other. The event will consist of food, music, treatment programs, and overdose prevention training.

“You can provide resources and give them a piece of paper with information on it,” Thompson said. “But to really be there and be available and to give them your contact information. I really think it’s getting down in the trenches and it’s talking to these people face to face that you really start to see benefits.”

Thompson said she is in recovery herself and oftentimes those in recovery do not receive the support they need during the process. Thompson said the recovery process is very challenging.

“There are a lot of people that unfortunately just never have the opportunity to recover and come out on the other side if you will,” Thompson said. “I’d say it’s extremely hard.”

Thompson said Clay County has struggled with drug abuse as the opioid epidemic has had a stranglehold on the county.

“I think everyone is aware of the opioid epidemic and how Clay County was impacted by that,” Thompson said. “We are still seeing the impact of all kinds of substances here in Clay County.”

Thompson said she wants Recovery Fest to be an annual event in the future. The event runs from 2pm-5pm Saturday, September 28th.
