Clay County Schools Add Four New Teachers

Clay County Schools hired four new teachers for the upcoming school year.

The teachers will fill positions at Hermitage Springs School and Celina K-8 School. Clay County Director of Schools Matt Eldridge said recruiting to a rural area remains a tough challenge.

“Unless you are fortunate to get sometime hometown people that want to return or live near by,” Eldridge said. “The bigger systems are usually able to provide more benefits.”

Eldridge said the school system was fortunate to find past students to fill the positions. Three three of the four new hires are from Clay County. The other teacher is from Kentucky. One more teaching position will be available if Clay County’s student population is large enough.

The school system originally advertised for five teacher positions in May. Eldridge said the four hires already completed interviews with the principal of their school and are ready to begin in August.

“The main thing we want to do is make sure everyone is safe,” Eldridge said. “Number two is to make sure it gets back to normal where all the teachers and children attend school together.”

The Clay County Schools announced in June the school year would start on time August 1st. Students will social distance, and the schools would be sanitized regularly. Parents who do not want to send their child to school will have the option to learn virtually.
