Clay County School Board voted Thursday night to change the system’s insurance plan to a less expensive option.
Clay County School Board Chairman Benji Bailey said the change came after the board conducted its annual insurance evaluation. Bailey said all the proposed insurance premiums were higher this year.
“That was cheaper overall than our product last year from an increase standpoint and then also cheaper than the state insurance many of the other school systems participate in, especially around here,” Bailey said. “So again it’s something that we feel like we’re offering better benefits at a lower cost hopefully to all our employees in our district.”
Bailey said the Board has conducted these evaluations every year since switching out of state-provided insurance. The new insurance goes into effect for 2024.
In other business, the school board approved flooring renovations for CTE programs at Hermitage Springs School. Bailey said the building is currently external to the school and has not been used by the staff or students in some time.
“It just needed some attention to be able to get students back in there and be safe and function as we need it to function,” Bailey said. “So we were able to replace that flooring as part of the grant to improve the facility in order to conduct a CTE program there that we need to.”
The system will use grant money to pay for the project.
Volunteer Celina K-8 Junior High Basketball Assistant Coach Dylan Maxfield hired as a full-time coach. Bailey said Maxfield had been working as a volunteer coach for some time for the school before being brought on full-time.
