Clay County School Board Approves First Reading Of New Policies From TSBA

The Clay County Board of Education discussed a set of policy changes from the Tennessee School Boards Association during their Thursday meeting.

Chairman Benji Bailey said there was a total of six policy changes which included five revised policies and one completely new one. Bailey said the all of the changes came from the TSBA and were to be considered for their first reading during the meeting.

“They provided these changes based on state – changes in state law,” Bailey said. “Some of them are affected by state law, and others are just based on current conditions that we face in society. So we just go with the recommendation because that’s – they’ve been very reliable for us in the past.”

Bailey said the revised policies involve regulations around district planning, revenues, fundraising, promotion, retention, and school board legislative involvement. He said the new policy is meant to address debit cards, credit cards, and credit lines with the school system.

Bailey said the policies will have to be discussed again at the board’s next meeting in order to be fully approved.

“Any school board policies are required two readings,” Bailey said.

The motion to approve this first reading was made by Board Member Todd Upton and seconded by Board Member Mark Ashlock.
