Clay County schools will open with traditional in person classroom and online learning options August 3.
School Director Matt Eldridge said masks will be encouraged for students and teachers.
“We want the families to feel safe,” Eldridge said. “Number one thing is we want the child to be safe at school and for the family to feel safe. We’re going to go ahead and open as most districts in the Upper Cumberland are going to do.”
Eldridge said other safety precautions include separating children in the cafeteria and classrooms during lunch, touchless water dispensers instead of water fountains, and using overnight sanitary foggers. He said any family not comfortable with sending their children to school can opt for virtual learning.
It’s not a perfect plan, Eldridge said, but school district officials are doing the best they can.
“I’ve touched base with other counties and other states,” Eldridge said. “I don’t know if there is a perfect plan out there. I’ll tell you the truth, it’s always scary when parents send children. They want them to be safe. We’re going to make them as safe as we can.”
