Clay County Commissioners have taken another step in the process of building a new jail.
County Mayor Dale Reagan said commissioners have passed a resolution to apply for a USDA loan for up to $7 million.
“When you do the process of the application it’s better to put an amount in there and one the cost comes in, hopefully it falls within that range or well under that range,” Reagan said. “If you put an amount in there that’s smaller than what the project comes in as you’ve got to turn around and go through the same application process all over again. That’s time consuming.”
An architectural firm has already started the design and engineering process for the future jail.
The current jail built in the early 60’s and can only house 14-inmates.
