Clay County Mitten Tree Accepting Applications For Children

Clay County’s Mitten Tree gift assistance program will be accepting applicants Tuesday.

Parents or guardians can apply at the Clay County Women’s building from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 a.m. Volunteer Misty Strong said any child under 18-years-old is eligible.

“Because of all those people that are willing to pick up mittens from locations within our county, primarily at the local banks, we are able to help children in need with some assistance during the holiday season,” Strong said.

Strong said mitten tress will be located a week after applications at the Bank of Celina and Macon Bank and Trust. Strong said each mitten will list essentials and one wish from the child.

“I think our community realizes that we all come from different walks of life, and when one of us is in need, it literally takes a village or community to help each other out,” Strong said. “So that generosity is what drives this project.”

Strong said local churches and clubs even pitch in to make sure presents are under the tree Christmas morning. Strong said the operation would not be possible without the volunteers that participate.

“So it really does take the whole community’s efforts to come together to make sure every mitten is taken so that when those gifts are returned, everyone who signed up with a need their need is met in the best way possible,” Strong said.

Strong said those who picked up a mitten must return gifts to Clay County Women’s Building on Friday, December 10. Then, families have until December 16th to pick up the presents. The building is located under the bridge at 215 Arcot Road.
