Clay County Government has launched a new Facebook page in hopes of improving transparency about county business.
County Mayor Dale Reagan said that this also comes as a form of compliance with new state legislature. He said the legislation requires the county to inform the public to the best of its ability.
“We don’t have a website per se for the county that’s set up yet, that’s something we’re possibly going to be looking into a little later,” Reagan said. “So we thought maybe that Facebook, having a Facebook page for information only would give us an opportunity.”
Reagan said the page will provide updates on things like commission meeting agendas, public notices, or even bid notices. He said the page will be utilized for just county business.
Reagan said this will also help the county communicate if there are any changes to meeting times, which can be especially confusing in the midst of budget season. He said while they are grateful for the two newspapers putting out the notice of meetings, they only print weekly. Reagan said last-minute changes will be more swiftly communicated with the public via the Facebook page.
“We just want it to be informational and be another way to get the word out about there about our meetings and stuff,” Reagan said. “Because even with the commissioners sometimes it gets confusing to them as well, especially this time of the year when we’re changing the meetings around. But if we post on the Facebook page, then if it’s 9:00 or 10:00 at night and they think ‘Oh gosh I can’t remember when the next meeting is’ it will be right there on the Clay County Government Facebook book page with our calendar.”
