The moment is still surreal for Clay County High School after winning its first state championship in boy’s basketball.
Head Coach Rob Edwards said the team savored the victory before returning to hundreds of waiting fans. Prinicipal Teia Arms said the boy’s team will meet with elementary school kids to share the life lessons of sports.
“To let them know to never give up, always work hard,” Arms said. “Even though we started that championship game off down 14-2 at one point in time. As long as you don’t give up and you keep fighting back, that’s the main thing.”
Arms said the plan is to celebrate with the community on Friday night at 6:00 PM at the high school. She said they are currently working to arrange everything for the meet and greet.
“We’re going to try to have some signs and posters made of the team. We’re going to get some state championship shirts hopefully made and ordered and have back,” Arms said. “And let the kids just sign, do autographs and meet and greet with all the community members
Coach Edwards said that one part of coaching that has stayed consistent over 20 years in Clay County, is the community’s support.
“Our community and our businesses here have always supported us, not just the sports teams but the schools in general,” Edwards said. “We never have to want for anything, if we need something then we just ask. Fortunately, we live in an area where people are generous enough to help us out.”
The Clay County Boy’s basketball team beat the Memphis Academy of Health Sciences 62-52 on Saturday. This is the first state championship for Clay County High School Boy’s Basketball.
