The Clay County community abuzz this week as the Bulldogs prepare to travel to Chattanooga for the football state championship.
Athletic Director Rob Edwards said the school plans to hold a pep rally Thursday before the team leaves Friday morning.
“I think this one is kind of special because it’s the first time a football team has ever been in a state championship game and we’ve played football here for 100 years literally,” Edwards said. “so there is a lot of excitement here just because it’s football.”
Edwards said while there is excitement, coaches tend to stick to a routine. He said this helps players keep their focus and make sure to do their best, even if the game is different than others.
Edwards said he is proud of the players both as athletes and as students. He said they continue to represent the community well.
“You know these high school kids and these high school athletics are what people recognize throughout the state when you say their name,” Edwards said. “So we’re very proud of them and we’re just happy for this group of students (…) You know these guys, they’re all great students, not just great athletes.”
