City To Begin Jefferson Sewer Exploration

Cookeville is preparing to begin an assessment on the sewer system on Jefferson Avenue.

Cookeville Water and Sewer Director Ronnie Kelly said the department has taken bids to begin video monitoring the sewer to check the condition. Kelly said the sewer video will be reviewed by city engineers to determine the scope of the project.

“Our in-house engineers will review it and look it and then get with our staff, our operations people and look at it all,” Kelly said. “Then try to determine what do we need to replace and what do we need to add for future development.”

Kelly said he hopes to have the assessment done by early Winter. Kelly said this is to try and have work complete before a potential 2022 TDOT repaving job on Jefferson Avenue.

“We wanted to try and get our work done this next year, in the 2021 year,” Kelly said.

Kelly said the price tag on this project will become more clear once the video monitoring work is done. The monitoring will also be a factor in creating the repair contract.

“To sort of get an idea of what we need to do, what the condition is,” Kelly said. “We could then do a contract to repair, and do any repairs like we did on Willow Avenue.”

Kelly said the 2022 date for TDOT repaving is not exact because the date keeps floating. Kelly said the department is also monitoring the water system that goes through Jefferson Avenue.
