City Seeking Feedback on West End Park

The City of Cookeville is looking for citizen feedback on how to use different areas of West End Park.

Cookeville City Manager James Mills said the volleyball court and playground are atop the list. There are just under four acres at West End Park the city is looking to re-purpose and enhance. A splash pad is being considered, but Mills said the city wants to know if a splash pad is what citizens want.

“There’s been discussion about a possible splash pad, but before we go down that route, I wanted to get some input from residents in the area to see if that’s what they would like,” Mills said. “The concern about a splash pad is that you only get three or four months use out of that during the year.”

The splash pad is just one piece of the park the city is seeking feed back on. There are 2.3 acres of a multi-use field and 1.5 acres that include the playground and volleyball courts.

“There’s some decisions that need to be made about re-use of a volleyball court area, maybe there’s a better use for that,” Mills said. “The existing playground if some changes need to be made to that.”

Mills said preserving and using areas for parks is important for the city as developers continue to buy land.

“As we grow, it’s going to become more and more important as developers try and find every piece of property they can,” Mills said. “Which is the nature of development, but we need to be committed, and I believe we are to preserving as much open space and recreational facilities as we can.”

Mills said the city is considering forming a committee for interested citizens on West End Park. For immediate ideas and opinions, Mills said to contact Leisure Services Director Rick Woods.
