City of Baxter Gets $500K Sewer Grant

The City Of Baxter got good news Thursday in its efforts to upgrade water and sewer services.

“Baxter was awarded a $500,000 grant with the Appalachian Regional Commission,” City Engineer Tom Bennett said. “So, that is for a project to continue sewer rehabilitation and sewer improvements within the City of Baxter.”

Thursday night’s board meeting included the acceptance of the grant and the execution of various contractual documents with the ARC.

“This is actually a continuation of a long-term sewer rehabilitation program that the City of Baxter started several years ago,” Bennett said. “It started with basically an investigative process to determine the sources of infiltration and inflow.”

Bennett said the grant requires a 50 percent local match.

“They can actually use other federal agency funds and other funds from other grant agencies to match that,” Bennett said. “So, at least conceptually it looks like the city is going to be able to use their ARP funding that they’ve gotten from TDEC to count as the match towards this ARC program.”
