As you shop this Tax Free Weekend, new unified school supply lists in Putnam County should make shopping easier.
Grades 5-12 Curriculum Supervisor Bubba Winningham said the change was made to support families with multiple children attending different schools. There are three different lists that can be found on the school system’s website: one for kindergarten and first grade, one for second through fourth grade, and one for fifth through eighth grade.
“A real easy and convenient feature there if parents want to go online they can access that feature where basically you click on the list, you click on the store that you want the list from, you want to shop from, and it automatically loads your cart with everything on that list,” Winningham said.
Winningham said they are still waiting to receive feedback about the new lists, but the experience has been positive so far. He said officials hope the new system will make for less waste as parents head to stores this weekend to shop.
Winningham said the change also makes things easier for schools because the consistency makes it easier for administration and teachers to manage moving forward.
“Our goal would be at the end of this year as we start, you know, planning for 2025-2026 is just to send to principals and say, ‘Hey, any updates to the list that we already have agreed upon? Or any subtractions?'” Winningham said. “You know, we’ve found that in years past we’ve taken things off the list that we don’t, you know, may not be utilized anymore.”
Winningham said the reason they started looking into creating these new lists was because he and Pre-K-4 Curriculum Supervisor Diana Wood were spending a lot of time trying to establish new lists for the different grade levels of each school every year.
“As we looked at this across the board we said, ‘A lot of these things, they’re all asking for the same thing,'” Winningham said. “‘So why don’t we just come up with a uniform list that all of our schools can use?'”
Winningham said there are no uniform lists for high schoolers because their needs are more individualized at that level.
