Celina Working To Add Eagle Live Stream

The City of Celina working to add an eagle camera that would livestream the daily activities of an eagle on the Cumberland River.

Celina Mayor Luke Collins said the camera would allow residents to watch the eagles on the city’s website. Collins said Twin Lakes already has an eagle camera and the city thought it would be a good idea to have something similar to highlight the Cumberland River.

“They got one for Dale Hollow Lake and Dale Hollow Lake definitely compliments Celina but Celina is a river town,” Collins said. “We have the Obed River and the Cumberland River and this is where they come together so in my opinion the river has always been not appreciated as much.”

Collins said the city is in contact with the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency to see if the city would be allowed to implement the camera. Collins said not many places can say an eagle lives in their hometown and hopes the eagle camera would be something that the Celina community could enjoy.

“My mother always said that Celina is the garden spot of the world and that there was no place any better and I would certainly amen that,” Collins said. “But even the best place in the world can be improved upon so I think it’s just a good fun thing that we can do and I doubt that it would cost very much to do it.”

Collins said he is hoping to implement the eagle camera sometime this year. Collins said it may not happen this year as there are several legal hoops to jump through.

“There are some federal laws and there are things that you can do and things that you can not do,” Collins said. “It’s a pretty big fine and you can get in a lot of trouble if you don’t treat the eagles right, so we want to make sure we are following the rules and do whatever is appropriate.”

Collins said he is not expecting to get approval right away as it is nesting season. Collins said disturbing a nest during this time of year could cause the eagle to abandon the nest and leave eggs behind.
