Celina Aldermen will not allow any sewer taps outside of the city limits without annexation.
Mayor Luke Collins said the issue arose when the city provided sewer lines to an industrial property outside of the city that was later turned into residential housing. Collins said that led to more residences trying to get added to the Celina sewer systems. Collins said the rule is necessary to put into place now because of a person selling forty lots on county land who is advertising the lots as having city sewer systems.
“If forty people buy those lots, invest a bunch of money, they’re going to be expecting city sewer and thinking they’re going to get city sewer,” Collins said. “And I think we need to clear that up that, you know, that’s not the case.”
Collins said two of the properties have already been hooked up to the city’s sewer when they were not supposed to be. Collins said the sewer systems that were installed for the former industrial property were a special investment from the city and were not designed to support a subdivision.
Collins said he believed the sewer tap regulation had been passed by the city before, but was not positive that was true and wanted to approve it during their Tuesday meeting to be sure.
“Just to be double-safe I’d like to ask that y’all pass that,” Collins said.
