Celina Industrial Park Passes Archaeological Study

The City of Celina’s Industrial Park project will continue after the land passed an archaeological study.

Clay County Chamber of Commerce Director Doug Young said a group of historians studied the future park area for Native American burial grounds.

“We have the Cumberland River running right through our county, and there’s lots of river bottoms all up and down that river,” Young said. “A long time ago Indians lived up and down that river. If they happened to have a graveyard, one of their graveyards, located on the property that you’re trying to turn into an industrial park then you can’t do that.”

Young said the next step is to present the positive archaeological study to the Department of Environment and Conservation.

Once complete the Industrial Park project will have 52-acres available for incoming businesses. Young said if the state approves the study septic systems and waterlines are the next step in the project.

Young said the Appalachian Regional Commission and the state has provided funding in the past.

“A small county like us can’t afford to spend a lot of money on an industrial site because we just don’t have it,” Young said. “So we rely on grant money to be able to do that.”

Young said he hopes the process will take a few weeks.
