Celina Fills Recreation Board, Focusing On Donaldson Park Improvements

Celina has filled its five member Recreational Advisory Board after four community members stepped up to the task.

Mayor Tonya Spears said now work can begin to create recreational programs and focus on Donaldson Park improvements. Spears said the number one priority is a splash pad and possibly a pool.

“There is a very large area in front of where the playground is and possibly somewhere along in that area,” Spears said. “Which that’s just a very long-term goal but it is something that the public would like to see.”

Spears said improving an existing walking trail at the park is another immediate goal for the board. She said the trail has areas that need to be smoothed out to improve safety in the park.

“There’s an existing walking trail down at Donaldson Park, it used to be an old parcourse several years ago,” Spears said. “It just needs a little work on the trail and maybe some areas smoothed out just a little bit. There’s been some drainage there so we can work on that to make it just a little bit safer for the elderly and make a smoother walking surface.”

Mayor Spears will be the fifth member on the board, after residents came forward to fill the board. She said having the board filled allows for a unified effort to improve Celina recreation.

“It’s very valuable to have that committee together and they can also branch out and they’re in the community, they’re business owners,” Spears said. “They see a lot of our people and it’s a good way to collect information and possibly have a more direct plan for the future of the park.”

The Celina Recreational Advisory Board was created by the board of aldermen in February. Spears had said previously, that the boards formation creates more opportunities to pursue grants to improve the park.
