The Celina Volunteer Fire Department getting new turnout gear thanks to a grant and the city’s support.
Firefighter Russell West said the department received a $20,000 state grant. He approached the Board of Aldermen Tuesday night seeking an additional $30,000 to completely replace the inventory.
“Our newest gear was about 2011,” West said. “We have about four sets of it. Then I would say six or seven of our other guys are wearing is 03 to 09 gear, so it’s all out of date and all getting pretty rough.”
The Board of Aldermen approved to financially assist the department if needed. City Recorder Timeka Garrison said the department could also pursue a USDA grant to cover the cost.
‘That’s a route we could go and possibly get a little more,” Garrison said.
West said the department wants to replace 13 turnout suits in total. West said about five would be covered through state funds. Alderman Justin Rich said the city’s funds are healthy enough to cover the rest if needed.
“Financially we are looking great,” Rich said. “I don’t see why we are not going to be able to help you. We’ll bring this up at the next meeting when we know more once you’re fitted in you talk to her (Timeka).”
Alderman Winton Dillon said he voted yes to ensure the firefighters are safe. Alderman Kenny Westmoreland said the last thing the city needs is a fatality from a fire.
