While the season is still months away, Cookeville Softball Coach Jordan Webb said supporters are hard at work at getting the field ready for the upcoming season.
Webb said this week the team was able to aerate the field and cover it with hundreds of pounds of seed and fertilizer. He said without the help, it would just be him doing as much as he can by himself.
“They do all the field work and they’re amazing,” Webb said. “This year we have a lot of stuff going on. We aerated the field a little over a week ago and they’re always mowing and edging on a weekly basis. And yeah, they aerated, seeded and fertilized.”
Webb said he tries to thank the parents as much as possible for their help, but noted that it is hard to put into words how much it truly means to him. In his 14th season as head coach, Webb said the field has never looked better.
He said the field’s condition is all thanks to his volunteer grounds crew, he is thankful that their green thumbs allow him to focus on other aspects of coaching. The field’s condition will have an impact of the identity and future of the program according to Webb.
“There’s a lot of pride that goes into the work that everybody puts in,” Webb said. “And the players see that and not only do they feel better about being part of the program but they do play a little bit better and practice a little harder. And it also draws in players from middle school when they see some of the facilities and the effort that’s been put in.”
He said thanks to Brian Dudney, Lee Martin, Brandon Presley and Josh Womack, he has been able to work on a lot of other projects besides grass. The Cavs softball program will be receiving an LED scoreboard this season and should break ground on a new indoor hitting facility in the next few months.
“The truth is without all of those parents putting in all that effort and the parents, players and families doing the fundraising, none of this would happen,” Webb said. “And, there’s been years past where we didn’t have the opportunity to do anything because we didn’t have the parental support or the funds. And the last few years, this has been such a fantastic group of people to make the softball program a better place.”
