The Cookeville Cavalier basketball programs are hosting a family night and alumni game fundraiser Saturday afternoon.
Lady Cavs Head Coach Jamie Gillies said she is excited to host this event for the first time. She said that former coach Mindy Odom led the hunt for potential participants and that the boys’ head coach Matt Hill is reaching out to the men that have gone through the program in his 20 years as a Cavalier.
“I think it’s pretty cool to bring in a lot of the guys that he played with and that he knows throughout his playing career, as well as coaching career,” Gillies said. “So, I think it’s really neat for our current players to see the people who paved the way for our program today.”
The alumni game will be held between even and odd graduating classes, with the girls game starting at 6pm and the boys to follow. The Lady Cavs will also be fundraising that night.
“We still need a little bit of money to help with our cost for the season,” Gillies said. “So, we’re doing a silent auction. The girls are going to get in teams and put together some baskets that people will be able to bid on. But everything for the night will be free unless you want to be a part of those fundraisers for the girls.”
Along with the silent auction, there will be a cake walk for people to participate in and also bouncie houses in the upstairs gym for families with children. Gillies said the money raised will go towards feeding the team before games, help pay for their new uniforms and any other expenses that may pop up.
“This is the best time of the year,” Gillies said. “Basketball starts and you get Thanksgiving and then you get Christmas, it doesn’t get much better than that. And so we’re so excited and it’s always exciting at the beginning of the season.”
