Cane Creek Pedestrian Bridge Work Begun

Work has begun on widening a pedestrian bridge in Cookeville’s Cane Creek Park.

Leisure Services Director Rick Woods said that this work will serve as a precursor to saving the shoreline of the trail in Cane Creek.

“For us to be able to stabilize the shoreline we need to be able to get trucks and equipment across to that north shoreline area, and that means crossing that bridge,” Woods said. “And the bridge was in need of repairs so we looked at going ahead and doing that first.”

Woods said that the work will include widening the culvert as well. He said that to complete the project, a small portion of the trail will be closed. He also that the lake levels will be lowered slightly, which could affect bank fishing.

“You still will be able to go out on the boats and fish from a boat,” Woods said. “We don’t know exactly how much we’ll need to drop the lake until we start the work on it, but it will impact bank fishing a little bit. So that’s important to keep in mind. And also it’s important to keep in mind that this inconvenience will not last forever and it’s going to make (the park) better once we complete it.”

Woods said that they estimate the work to take about six weeks.
