Cane Creek Park’s mountain bike trails will be closed for the next few weeks after recent storms downed trees across the pathways.
Leisure Services Director Rick Woods said storms damaged roughly 70 to 80 trees throughout the park.
“We have many trees down there and they’re large, mature trees,” Woods said. “It’s going to take us some time with our forces to get those trees cut and removed and get the mountain bike trail cleared again.”
Woods said the department’s main priority during clean up is to clear walking trails first since they are used more frequently.
“There’s not quite as much damage there, but we’ve tackled that [and] started that work already and also started work on the mountain bike trail,” Woods said, “but that’s going to take a little bit longer because of the amount of damage.”
Woods said the cleanup process on the mountain bike trail could take anywhere between two and three weeks.
“It’s a difficult area to get to, to move trees out, to get things cut, and get them out of the way,” Woods said. “That slows that process down a little bit. We’re working hard to get that completed and cleaned up.”
According to Woods, no one was injured at the park and no structural damage was reported other than damaged fencing from a fallen tree.
Woods said the two-to-three week time frame is tentative as outside factors could play into the cleanup process.
“It depends on a lot of things,” Woods said. “It depends on weather conditions, it depends on how quickly we can go, and what we can leave there on the property and what we can haul away. Just depends on a lot of different things. We’re hoping that we can get that completed within two to three weeks.”
Severe weather swept through the Upper Cumberland region late Friday and into Saturday morning, causing power outages and triggering tornado warnings throughout the area.
