Byrdstown Renovating Vintage Gas Station As Tourism Landmark

Downtown Byrdstown will have a new centerpiece for tourism as the town restores a Gulf Gas Station across from city hall.

Mayor Sam Gibson said the town bought the 1940’s station a few years ago. Gibson said it needed major repairs, so officials decided to do a full renovation to create a vintage filling station.

“By doing that, we want it to be a old gas station museum,” Gibson said. “Also, the back of it as a museum for pretty much anything that is related to Pickett County.”

Gibson said a couple of 20’s and 30’s modeled cars and antique Gulf gas pumps are a few items that will be displayed. Gibson said the in-house renovations set for a December completion date with a grand opening to be announced.

“We’ve got the inside part ready to start hanging the antiques,” Gibson said. “The gas station part we lack a little bit. We’ve got some concrete on the outside to finish up, and the gas tanks are sitting in my office.”

Gibson said the building also features a recently painted “Welcome to Byrdstown,” mural. Gibson said the artwork and the gas station will hopefully draw more drivers to stop in town.

“We want it to be a little hot spot,” Gibson said. “Something a little different here in town that people can have a good time and be proud, and it be an impressive look.”

Gibson said the renovations closely follows a photo of a Gulf Gas Station at city hall. Gibson said the color scheme will be orange, blue and white. Gibson said a majority of the items are donated, so he thanks all community members that have helped make the project happen.
