Byrdstown Mayor Sam Gibson said he wants to put up signs to celebrate the Pickett County Girls High School Basketball Championship.
Gibson said he would like to work with the county and a local tourism group to get the signs in place. He said he does not care whether the sign is in the county or the city, as long as it is as visible as possible.
“And I know whenever you start dealing with state highways, you’re asking, you’re dealing with a different issue, just whatever you can get by with,” Gibson said. “We don’t want to put one on the state highway that’s fifty feet off the road, people can’t even see it. If that’s the case, we want to put it next to our ‘Welcome to Byrdstown’ sign.”
Gibson said the sign would reflect only this year’s victory, as the county has not won the girls basketball state championship in thirty-five years.
No action was taken on the matter, but all three aldermen expressed support of the mayor’s plan.
“Even though Pickett County’s got six state championships in girls basketball, it’s been thirty-five years since we’ve had one,” Gibson said. “You know it don’t seem that long, but it has.”
Gibson said he and alderman Rex Tompkins searched for any standing resolutions regarding ways to celebrate and honor local championships wins, but found none.
“We do want to not forget them and start thinking of something to do,” Gibson said.
