Byrdstown Installing LED Street Lights

Volunteer Energy Cooperative and Byrdstown are partnering to install new LED lights to decrease overall electric costs.

Mayor Sam Gibson said he reached out t0 the company expressing interest in making the switch last month. So far, the lights around the courthouse have already been replaced.

“We should get more efficient lighting and and better lights, more lights out in the area,” Gibson said. “Some of the lights are older and kind of dim. And this will make them a little more uniform and give us brighter streets.”

Gibson said Main Street will be the next area getting the upgrades. Volunteer Energy is performing the labor while the town is funding the project.

“There is no time frame. That is part of it,” Gibson said. “We are trying to work together and trying to get it done on times whenever they are available and do not have a lot of other priorities going on.”

Byrdstown is also in the preliminary stages with Volunteer Energy to install two electric car charging stations. Gibson said the city library is the main candidate to place the station.

“I think the library would be one place,” Gibson said. “And possibly where Bell’s is at.Someone could park there and go to the courthouse, go to the bank, go to the community center or go to Dixie.”
