Byrdstown is planning an Independence Day event so large, it needed two days to fit in all the fun.
Mayor Sam Gibson said everyone is invited to the West Main Street Pavilion on Friday and Saturday. Gibson said on Friday a big night out is planned for kids to come and play.
“We’re going to have our water slide and bouncy house open from about 5:00 PM to 8:30 PM,” Gibson said. “Then hopefully, we’re planning after that to go ahead at 8:30 to try and have another movie right here in our pavilions.”
Gibson said Saturday is when celebrations really kick off with a car show, cornhole tournament, frog race, lip syncing for cash prizes and free watermelon all afternoon. However, Gibson said this all leads up to most anticipated part, the fireworks show.
“Fireworks begin at 9:00 PM, right on the money,” Gibson said. “You can see them from lots of places all over the county and we do have a very good fireworks display. So it’s something where we have a lot of people that turn out just for the fireworks.”
Gibson said after having to cancel last year, the hope is to see a big turnout in the community. He said it took a lot of time and resources to make a 4th of July celebration possible, but it is what you do for a community wanting to get out and celebrate together.
“To see the satisfaction that the community gets out of it,” Gibson said. “We’re not talking just Byrdstown, we’re talking about the entire county and Upper Cumberland. Because we have coming in even from Kentucky.”
Gibson said if people want to enjoy all of Saturday’s activities, they should be there around 8:00 AM. He said there will be plenty of parking and food vendors when people make their way to Byrdstown on July 2 and 3.
