Byrdstown Conducting Study For HWY 111 Truck Lanes

Byrdstown will conduct a corridor study along Highway 111 through a T-DOT grant.

Mayor Sam Gibson said adding truck lanes on the north side of Highway 111 is the main focus.

“On the south side, we have truck lanes on both sides,” Gibson said. “And that makes it really good for people if you have a slow truck in front of you and loaded and trying to pull these hills. But over on the north side, we don’t have one on either side.”

Gibson said the town is also using the study to consider sidewalks down West Main Street and a traffic light where North and West Main Street meet. Corridor studies incorporate land use, safety and access to develop long term plans.

“A signal light here at the three way, which I am kind of pushing for and hoping we can get,” Gibson said. “A lot of people don’t see the stop signs. Just things to help the traffic.”

Gibson said the study stretches on Highway 111 all the way to Cove Creek Road. The town should receive feedback sometime this spring.

“We’re working with Mark Dudley with T-DOT through a grant we got,” Gibson said. “And we’ve hired some specialist out of Knoxville to come do the study.”
