Byrdstown Asking Customers For Water Reduction

The City of Byrdstown requested a voluntary water reduction in the Clark Mountain area Friday.

Mayor Sam Gibson said a pump station has failed for unknown reasons.

“We’ve been working on it for a couple of days, hoping to not have to issue the voluntary water reduction call,” Gibson said. “It’s not getting any better and we’ve got all our people out looking to see if there’s a waterline leak somewhere.”

Gibson said the voluntary reduction notice will be in place for the 24 hours or until crews can determine what’s causing the problem.

“We don’t know if the pump is going out or not, but we’re losing footage in our tank and it’s getting down to the scary stage,” Gibson said. “We think that we’re OK but we don’t want to run anyone out. We’re just wanting to conserve as much as possible in that area.”

About 300 households will be under the water reduction notice. Gibson is encouraging everyone to do their part in reducing water usage.

“We’d rather people not be out watering their gardens and cars or doing things that’s not necessary,” Gibson said. “Continue doing the things that are necessary, like cooking, drinking and taking a bath, but don’t use what you don’t have to have.”

Gibson said additional water reduction may be required after the 24 hour period.
