Burton’s United Methodist Church in Cookeville is raising money to reconstruct its chapel.
Pastor Diantha McLeod said the congregation noticed several months ago that the chapel walls were bulging on every side. McLeod said a contractor examined the building and determined that a damaged roof was the core of the problem. McLeod is confident that the community will help the church reach its goal of $100,000 through a string of fundraisers.
“They are willing to do whatever it takes,” McLeod said. “I’m sure there will be other events to be able to let the community know that Burton’s Chapel still exists, and they are still a vibrant part of the community in Putnam County.”
McLeod said the chapel cannot be used because of the issue, leaving some 50 people without their normal place of worship every Sunday. McLeod said the church is over 120 years old and the only African-American United Methodist Church in the area.
“There have been families that have worshipped at this church for years,” McLeod said. “Also, it’s been a pillar in the community. Last year at this time, there had been over 100 boxes of food donated to the community, and they weren’t able to do that this year.”
McLeod said she hopes to start the renovation in February. McLeod said she knows they will not get all of the money needed at once, but hopes people will show continued support.
“I’m always thinking that we have to do our part too, and this to is be willing to work toward our goals,” McLeod said. “I always think if people see what we are doing, they’re more inclined to help join in.”r.
