The Bread of Life Rescue Mission in Crossville has seen a spike in occupancy due to a cold spell over the past few days.
Founder and Director Connie Reagan said eleven people were taken into the mission Monday alone, with six coming overnight.
“Usually they come in during the night when it’s really cold and we try to take care of them,” Reagan said. “There’s a lot of people who come in to get a hot meal, a hot shower, and a place to lay down out of the cold.”
Reagan said the Mission is normally prepared for large influxes of people coming to the shelter during colder weather with some only staying temporarily. However, the sudden increase can sometimes create a strain on available resources.
“We just prepare bigger meals, we do their laundry, we give them clean, warm clothes to put on,” Reagan said. “We just try to help in what areas we can. There are some that will eat a hot meal, get a warm shower, and clean clothes. Then they go on their way but they come back to get warm and be fed again.”
Reagan said those who visit the shelter in their time of need are usually appreciative of the service, especially during times of bitter-cold temperatures.
“It means a lot because if they’re out there and they’re cold and hungry, then they come here and we do our best to try and meet their basic needs,” Reagan said.
Although daytime temperatures are expected to rise over the next few days, The National Weather Service predicts lows will stay below freezing into Sunday night. A 90 percent chance of rain and snow is expected in the Crossville area Wednesday night as well.
Reagan said those seeking temporary shelter from the cold – or those looking to donate to the Mission – can visit the Bread of Life office at 281 4th Street in Crossville.
