BonDeCroft Addition Has Caused Some Utility Issues As Crews Continue Digging

The addition to White County Schools’ BonDeCroft Elementary School progressing but not without some inconveniences.

The school closed for one day due to a water line leak in January. Director of Schools Kurt Dronebarger said again this week, the gas supply was interrupted causing the school to go without supply for a day.

“They ensured there was no safety issues or concerns,” Dronebarger said. “We were able to have school and have a regular day of school. We just had to change our lunch menu. We had one area without heat, but as you know, it is unseasonably warm right now so it was a warm day. Really so far just one day has been interrupted from learning.”

Dronebarger said he is not concerned about learning loss since students have only missed one additional day compared to other schools. Dronebarger said the project has presented challenges, but he believes the end result will be worth the process.

“I think the folks of BonDeCroft feel that way,” Dronebarger said. “I’ve talked to the principal and she has talked to teachers. They understand but are excited about what the end result will be. This is a similar to what we dealt with when we had an addition to Cassville. Those folks were pushed into a corner for a while and had limited use of the building. Ultimately, they were able to get a new portion of their school and something they are proud of.”

The expansion is slated for a December completion. It is a some 20,000 square foot two-story building that will connect two existing structures and create a new entrance. New classroom spaces and office areas will be constructed as well.

Dronebarger said access to the gymnasium has also been limited for students. Dronebarger said teachers and administration have been understanding that the issues are growing pains.
