Upper Cumberland State Senator Mae Beavers resigned from her Senate seat Wednesday, triggering the need for a special election.
DeKalb County Election Administrator Dennis Stanley said the date of the special election won’t be known until Governor Bill Haslam issues a writ of election order.
“Once he issues that order a primary will be held 55 to 60 days after that order,” Stanley said. “After that there will be a general election to select the winner. That will be held 100 to 107 days after the Governor’s writ of election.”
Stanley said the person who wins the election will only serve the position until the 2018 election.
Beavers will officially resign her seat September first and it’s expected that Governor Haslam will issue that order sometime after her resignation becomes official.
