BBB: Donate Wisely Following Disasters

The Better Business Bureau recommends doing your homework before opening your pocketbook following a disaster.

BBB Upper Cumberland Manager Elaine Smith said scammers look forward to disasters.

“People that are giving money to go help the people in Texas, make sure you’re giving it to the right people. You’re going to get all kinds of calls requesting money, donations. Just, my big advice would be check it out,” Smith said.

Smith said legitimate organizations always leave a paper trail. They also have verifiable websites and other information online.

“Tax receipts or their 501(C)(3) or they should be able to give some kind of financial paperwork for you to make sure they’re who you’re giving the money to,” Smith said.

Smith said residents should beware of those who come door-to-door to solicit donations. Also, if the solicitor puts pressure on you to donate now, it’s probably a scam.
