Baxter’s Exit 280 Project Schedules Construction Letting For Spring 2026

Baxter’s rural interchange improvement project has set a scheduled construction let date for spring of 2026.

TDOT allocated some $22 million for work on the Exit 280 interchange last year. T-DOT Region 2 Community Relations Officer Rae Anne Bradley said the project is expected to improve the safety and modernization of I-40 at State Route 56.

“A defined scope is still being figured out so that should be completed in the fall of this year,” Bradley said. “And then right of way acquisition will then begin in the fall of 2024 with a schedule letting in the spring of 2026. So a lot of those proposed improvements are still being worked out.”

Bradley said the interchange project is separate from the work being done on the new Ditty Road in response to Portobello America. She said the work will relocate and widen about half a mile of Ditty Road beginning at Baxter Road.

Bradley said this project is in the right-of-way acquisition and environmental permitting phase. She said that the project will be let out for construction in the fall of this year pending acquisition and permitting.
