The Baxter Seminary and Upperman High School Alumni Association will host a homecoming tailgate before Friday’s game.
Association Chair Eric Brown said since 1973, the group’s main goal has been providing scholarships for secondary education. Brown said events like this keep the scholarship fund healthy.
“Continuing the legacy of education in western Putnam that Baxter Seminary and Upperman High School has been a part of since 1913 or before that even,” Brown said. “We’ve awarded somewhere around 350-360-000 dollars in scholarships.”
Brown said the association wants the event to serve as a reconnection between older and younger alumni. Brown said many graduates today do not know the history of Baxter Seminary, and members want the history to transition with the new generation.
“A lot of the Baxter Seminary folks were the most hardened attendees,” Brown said. “Some of them would be coming from the Alabama area and areas around Tennessee. One of the things we are trying to do with the association now is revitalize that now. This is one effort to try to reach out with the younger members.”
Brown said registration will begin at 4:00 p.m. Brown said the $20 ticket gets you into the tailgate event, and also the Friday night game against Watertown.
“This is a new event for us,” Brown said. “We traditionally had a banquet in May where folks that attended Baxter Seminary or Upperman High School, we came together. Unfortunately COVID has made that difficult the past two Mays.”
Brown said a tent will be set up in the green space by the Upperman cafeteria. Brown said student organizations will prepare the food, so it’ll be Upperman students serving alumni.
