Baxter City Council rejected a zoning change Thursday night that would have allowed a 14-plat subdivision on Chestnut Street.
The proposed subdivision discussed in the Baxter Planning Commission to begin the night, with many Chestnut Street residents voicing opposition to the subdivision.
The proposed subdivision would have required the city to change the zoning order from an R-1 low-density residential zone to R-3 Super high-density residential zone due to the current lots having to be broken down into smaller lots. The ordinance to amend the zoning code was proposed to the city council and all council members voted in favor of rejecting the ordinance.
In other business, Baxter Mayor Danny Holmes was sworn in by Putnam County Clerk Wayne Nabors. Holmes said becoming mayor of Baxter was destiny.
“I want all of you to know and I want the public to know that we have come together as one,” Holmes said. “And we are going to do what is best for this city.”
Holmes was sworn in by Nabors 14 years ago as Baxter’s Chief of Police. Nabors also swore in re-elected council members Dustin Stanton and Jeff Herald. Stanton said the council has put aside previous issues with Holmes and will move forward.
“We have all come together as one,” Stanton said. “And we are going to work for the citizens. What’s happened in the past we will try to leave it there.”
The council approved two purchase orders for Sewer projects.
