The final coat has dried and the new mural is complete on the facade of Baxter Primary School.
Principal Marsha Wyatt said the mural depicts kid-friendly, kid-focused imagery that will inspire students of any background. Manuel Fuentes painted the mural and Wyatt said that the finished product looks way better than she ever expected. Wyatt said the mural gives representation to kids of different ethnicities and different interests.
“We just wanted something that was inviting, that was kid-friendly, and that just said welcome to Baxter Primary School when parents, visitors, and other people were in the area,” Wyatt said.
Wyatt said that she and two other staffers came up with the idea for the mural and sketched it out on paper. Wyatt said that after approval of the design from the school board, Fuentes executed the painting with some of his own touches to create the welcoming final product.
“Because we are comprised of students from all different backgrounds, we just wanted that depicted on the mural for sure so that everyone felt welcome and feels like they are a part of the school,” Wyatt said.
Wyatt said the mural features a diverse collection of students in a typical school environment. The mural shows books, blocks, math symbols, fire trucks, rainbows, and much more. Wyatt said. Wyatt said she hopes the mural will generate creativity within the student body and spark interest in art.
“That’s what our school is all about,” Wyatt said. “Making sure that the kids are provided with what they need and that they want to come to school.”
The project was commissioned by the Bater Primary PTO.
