Baxter’s special called meeting scheduled for Tuesday cancelled after threats about the meeting were found online.
Police Chief Al Reyes said they decided to do what would keep the community the safest. Reyes said the decision to cancel the meeting ultimately made by the city council.
“There were some threats made over the weekend on social media,” Reyes said. “And we felt it was in our best interest to keep the public safe and our folks safe in case there was any credibility to the threats and that’s why it was cancelled.”
Reyes said there is an ongoing investigation being conducted by the police department to learn more about the threats. The only item that was to be considered at the meeting was an ordinance amending the operating budget of the city’s general and special funds for this year.
“From what I understand, I think that the order of business will be taken up at the next scheduled meeting,” Reyes said.
Reyes said the threats were found in different places on social media including “all over” the Hip Baxter Facebook page.
“We’re looking at it right now,” Reyes said. “It’s under investigation.”
