Area law enforcement will be cracking down on safety violations during the summer travel season, according to Highway Patrol Captain R.C. Christian.
During a Click It or Ticket press conference, Christian said violations go beyond not wearing a seat belt.
“We’re always looking for distracted drivers,” Christian said. “We’re seeing such increases in crashes and even fatal crashes involving distracted drivers. That’s something we’re going to be looking for.”
Christian reminds families traveling for Memorial Day weekend to stay safe on the roadways.
“We want families to reach their destination safely,” Christian said. “If we can have a bearing in that then we want to.”
Christian said other areas law enforcement will be cracking down on include hazardous moving and impaired driving.
“We’re always looking for impaired drivers that are out here putting other lives at risk,” Christian said. “We continue to train our troopers in this area because there’s such an increase in it, and we really have to be on top of it.”
Law Enforcement Liaison Fred Sherrill said agencies will pay special attention to those who are not buckling up.
“We’re also going to be paying special attention to… individuals driving pickup trucks,” Sherrill, adding studies show those who drive pickups are more likely to not wear a seat belt.
Christian said the Highway Patrol issued over 3,100 seat belt violations alone in the Upper Cumberland during the summer of 2017.
