Storms Saturday night knocked out power to roughly 90 percent of Cookeville.
Cookeville Police Major Carl Sells said those power outages affected traffic lights as well.
“For a large portion of town, if not the entire amount of town, traffic signals weren’t operating. Oftentimes people don’t know how to respond to that situation so that they’re driving safely,” Sells said.
The vehicle on the right has the right of way, he said.
“State law says if you approach an intersection that is governed by a traffic signal and that traffic signal isn’t working than that intersection is to be treated as if it was a four-way stop,” Sells said.
Severe damage was reported in Monterey, Lake Tansi and Doyle as well. The National Weather Service assessment team determined the damage was caused by straight line winds.
