Another $50,000 will be needed to finish the Avery Trace Middle School softball field, after problems with old pipes found in the construction area.
The School Board approved adding the money to meet the overage. Maintenance Supervisor John Magura said the system had already used the $100,000 in contingency funds appropriated for the project to correct the issue. Magura said he believes this will cover the rest of the project.
Magura said crews are working on dugouts with grading on the field the next step. Sodding will follow. Minus rain, Magura said he expects to see a lot of work on the project during October.
The school has never had a softball facility, forcing students to go to Jere Whitson for practice and games. The facility being built adjacent to the football field.
Meantime, no leaks found after a roof replacement completed at the former Park View School. Magura said that project should be complete in the next week or so. The design firm working on the transformation of that facility from an elementary school to a pre-K facility is completing contract details with school officials.
Director of Schools Corby King said he hopes to have that contract for board approval next month. King said he wants to make sure the school system is fully protected in the agreement.
