Pickett County’s authentic log cabin, the Amonett House, aiming to finish rebuilding work by the first of the year.
Byrdstown-Pickett County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Billy Robbins said the county has wanted to turn the 1830s cabin into an attraction for some time. He said it was a $25,000 ThreeStar grant and additional help from the Ammonett family that made it possible.
“We are taking it down piece-by-piece, categorizing it, and putting it right back up in pristine condition,” Robbins said.
Robbins said that they often get inquiries from tourists to enter the cabin, and after its reconstruction, that will be made possible. He said that in addition to redoing the home, they also plan on making a living village on the site.
Robbins said that making the Amonett House an interactive attraction can bring in even more tourism for the county.
“That’s the idea behind it,” Robbins said. “You know we’ll have a new attraction for the county. In a very good location, an extremely good location right here down on the edge of town. Yeah, so we’re looking forward to it, to have a lot of people come through and look at it. A lot of people come by now and say ‘Well can we look inside?’ And no you can’t right now, but you will be able to soon.”
