American Legion Returns Program To Help Veterans

The American Legion Post 4 and the Auxiliary Unit 4 of Livingston are rebooting the Helping Our Veterans Program.

Auxiliary Unit 4 President Romanna Schnitcke said the program helps veterans in any way possible whether that be mowing a lawn or changing a light bulb. Schnitcke said the program was restarted as many veterans are moving to the area.

“People are not aware of the programs that we have in place,” Schnitcke said. “We thought this would be a good way of bringing it to the attention of the community and the residents since there are so many new people in the area that may not be aware of who we are and what we do. We want to get these  people to know that we are here to help.”

Schnitcke said veterans are often too embarrassed to ask for help with small tasks. Schnitcke said the American Legion and the Auxiliary Unit are there to help veterans and their families no matter what they need.

“So many times the veterans are just not appreciated as much as they should be,” Schnitcke said. “They don’t realize how much help there is available to them outside their families and a lot of them don’t have families. We are a family, the American Legion and other organizations are a family.”

Schnitcke said veterans have many different kinds of struggles they deal with on a day-to-day basis.

“They have all kinds of challenges,” Scchnitke said. “They have financial ones which we can’t help. They just have a lot of physical struggles due to their age in some cases and injuries from when they were on active duty.”

Schnitcke said additional support from the community is always welcomed. Schnitcke said the American Legion is not opposed to anyone helping veterans.

“The bigger projects that we take on we can always use financial support or physical support in some cases,” Schnitcke said. “Maybe you have a piece of equipment that would help us help the veterans.”
