All Counties Complete Budgets On Time

The state Comptroller’s office said all Tennessee counties completed their budget by the state’s August 31 deadline.

Overton County Executive Ben Danner said with teamwork, the process was quick in his county.

The whole thing was done in June, before the county’s new fiscal year started on July 1.

“That’s actually the soonest I know of that Overton County’s had a budget set, usually we’re in August before we get a budget set but it makes everything easier when we start the fiscal year with a new budget already in place instead of having to go off last year’s continuing budget for a few months then go back and readjust everything,” Danner said.

Danner said all the county offices worked together on the budget. He hopes they’ll be able to complete the budget at before July 1 again next year.

In 2015, the Tennessee General Assembly approved a measure forcing counties to complete their budgets by August 31. Before that time, it was not unusual for some Tennessee counties to operate without a current budget into October.
