Algood citizens will help decide what happens to the old water tank behind First National Bank.
Mayor Lisa Chapman-Fowler said a town hall will be held next month to discuss the next steps.
“The city is faced with a decision that we’re going to have to come to within a year,” Chapman-Fowler said. “We have estimates to tear it down and we have estimates to have it painted. What we are asking for is all the public input and public comment. We want this to be an open invitation.”
Algood has preliminary plans to budget $30,000 for tearing down the water tank during the 2020-2021 fiscal year. It’s estimated to cost $100,000 to paint the structure.
Chapman-Fowler said the city will discuss other ideas during the April 4th meeting.
“The tank means a lot to people that aren’t even citizens or residents to Algood proper,” Chapman-Fowler said. “If any of you know of anyone who’s interested in the tank or the future of it, we’re asking you to get the word out.”
Despite the cost of restoration, Chapman-Fowler said last month that the city could potentially put money towards restoration with some requirements.
“We have talked about maybe putting the $30,000 that it would take to tear it down… and putting it towards the $100,000 that would pay for the painting,” Chapman-Fowler said. “Then, there would have to be a committee or group formed, and they would have to raise the rest of the money.”
Public Works Director Victor Jones said the water tank went out service some 20-years ago. It held 200,000 gallons of water at one time.
The April 4th meeting will take place at 6 p.m. inside city hall.
