The Algood Election Case was dismissed in Chancery Court Wednesday, declaring Ruby Hawkins as the final council member.
Chancellor Ronald Thurman dismissed the case on the basis of indispensable parties and the fact that Justin Grant’s party filed an amended complaint outside of the set five-day window.
In a written statement, Hawkins thanked everyone who supported her during the process.
“I look forward to working with all the citizens of Algood,” Hawkins said. “I’m just glad it’s over and I’m ready to get to work now.”
After the hearing, Grant congratulated Hawkins for her victory and said “I’ll send you flowers.”
Hawkins’ attorney Will Mullins stated during the hearing a new election wouldn’t have made sense. A new election likely would have subjected Bill Billbrey to another election after taking one of the two open council seats during the August election.
