The Algood City Council proposing revisions to the Farmer’s Market to broaden vendor regulations.
City Administrator Keith Morrison said if passed, farmers outside of Putnam County will no longer need a certified letter of homegrown goods from their ag extension office. Items from whole sellers would also be allowed.
“They’re just concerned that we had the rules so tight and so stringent that it was making it difficult for people to participate in the farmer’s market,” Morrison said. “They’re just wanting it to be a little bit easier and a little bit less burdensome to be able to be a participant at the farmer’s market.”
Morrison said the changes will be considered at he council’s June 14th meeting. Morrison said the revisions would be implemented two weeks after approval.
“We don’t have to enforce it per say,” Morrison said. “So once it goes into to full effect, we can already be applying it as we are trying to bring people in.”
Morrison said the goal is to jump start participation. Morrison said construction caused the market’s parking lot to close often, which deterred growth. Morrison said this summer will be the first season the market has been completely open.
“We’re hoping as the summer moves on and people start to get produce in that we’ll see more and more activity over there,” Morrison said.
The Algood Farmer’s Market is located at 215 West Main Street. Morrison said vendors can set up throughout the week.
