The City of Algood will apply for grant funding to help support the historic White Plains home.
Mayor Lisa Chapman-Fowler said the city would use the funding to make exterior improvements to the home.
“If you have driven by, I hope you’ve been able to see that we’re already trying to make improvements,” Chapman-Fowler said. “There’s some gravel down for parking and we’ve a handicap ramp. We’ve done some sanding to get rid of some of the old paint, so that we can begin the process of restoring the home to some of it’s former glory.”
City Council members voted to apply for a $50,000 historic grant during Tuesday night’s meeting. City Administrator Keith Morrison said the goal is to preserve the home for future generations.
“We don’t want to lose the condition of the house, so we want to work to make sure we’re protecting it from the weather,” Morrison said. “I think the house has a lot of potential for us in the future. As we continue to work on this, I think it will be a real draw for our community.”
Algood purchased the White Plains Home for $250,000 in April 2018. In 2009 the home was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
