Alexandria was the only Upper Cumberland town to receive a historic preservation grant from the state Historic Preservation Office.
The town will receive $5,400 to help restore the Seay Chapel and East View Cemetery. Both appear on the National Register of Historic Places.
Mayor Bennett Armstrong said the cemetery gates need special attention.
“Those two gate markers are the beginning and ending of the property description for the town of Alexandria so I’d like to honor the town and those that are up there by having nice, repaired, refurbished stone gates,” Armstrong said.
Armstrong said work to repair the sites began before he took office. Armstrong said he hopes to have the project completed before he leaves office next year. A one-term mayor, Armstrong has chosen to not run for re-election.
